Catherine Bagnell Styles

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

To paint is to see.

I am in awe of what I see in nature and am compelled to capture it in a painting. My practice is primarily landscapes and still life. I’m motivated to create an impression leaving room for the viewer to participate.

I primarily paint places I know and have experienced. Sometimes plein air but most often I paint in my studio from photographs I have taken. Whether I’m outside or in my light-filled studio perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, my work is colourful and optimistic. I adore texture and character in people, places and of course, paintings. My work is always evolving as I learn, experiment and grow.

In my corporate life I tell stories with words. As a visual artist, I tell stories with colour, texture, light and form.

ABOUT ME

Creativity has always played an important role in my career in marketing, communications and advertising as an important element of story-telling and making a connection. I've had the very good fortune to study at NSCAD as well as with these talented artists: Barbara Schilling, Tim McGuire, David Lacey, Mike Svob and Bob Burridge. My paintings have found homes in private collections throughout Canada and the US. My work has appeared in solo and group shows and in juried shows across Canada.

I am a juried Active member of the Canadian Federation of Artists.
